Tiger penis, referring to the penis and testicles of tigers, which are felines, has often been attributed with special meanings in traditional beliefs and some cultural expressions. However, from the perspectives of modern science and ecological conservation, it involves complex and sensitive aspects.
In terms of morphology, its overall appearance exhibits specific biological characteristics, featuring a relatively thick main structure. The surface texture and quality vary depending on the processing method, generally showing a certain degree of toughness and a unique texture. In descriptions related to traditional Chinese medicinal materials, there are relevant statements about its morphology, such as "thick and curved, with accessory structures".
In the old records of traditional Chinese medicine culture, tiger penis was once believed to have the so-called effects such as "nourishing the kidney and enhancing yang (a concept in traditional Chinese medicine referring to invigorating male vitality)". The formation of this concept, on one hand, originated from the simple association of the medicinal value of animal organs in ancient times, based on the primitive thinking mode of "using the shape to supplement the corresponding part" (a traditional Chinese medicinal concept that holds that animal organs can have an effect on the corresponding functions of the human body); on the other hand, in the context of the past, such claims were passed down orally among the people, gradually becoming a traditional perception accepted by some people, and even mentioned in some ancient books and folk remedies.

During the long developmental course of ancient Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) culture, some ancient books such as Compendium of Materia Medica once mentioned tiger penis. However, these records were limited by the cognitive level of the time and contained many unscientific elements. The descriptions of tiger penis in Compendium of Materia Medica were mostly based on the primitive thinking of "using the shape to supplement the corresponding part" (a traditional TCM concept that associates animal organs with human body functions of the same form). It forced a connection between tigers' reproductive organs and human reproductive functions, claiming that tiger penis could "nourish the kidney, enhance yang (a TCM term referring to invigorating male vitality), and strengthen muscles and bones". Nevertheless, against the historical backdrop of that era, modern scientific analytical methods were lacking, making it impossible to conduct accurate research on its components and pharmacology. Such simple associative records were more like attempts during the exploratory stage of ancient medicine.
Attitudes toward and usage of tiger penis varied across different dynasties. In some dynasties, such as the Tang Dynasty, the social atmosphere was relatively open, and there was a certain market demand for health preservation and vitality enhancement. Items like tiger penis, which were believed to have special effects, might have circulated among the nobility and powerful classes, used to meet their needs for improving physical functions and satisfying their curiosity. By the Ming and Qing Dynasties, with the further development of TCM theory, although the medicinal use of tiger penis was still mentioned, some physicians began to question its actual efficacy. However, amid the prevalent traditional beliefs, such doubts failed to become the mainstream.
In ancient times, the acquisition of tiger penis initially mostly came from the incidental utilization after tigers were accidentally hunted. At that time, tigers were relatively numerous in the natural environment, and there were occasional cases where tigers entered human activity areas and were killed. But as the demand for tiger penis gradually emerged, some people began to hunt tigers specifically to obtain their reproductive organs, which to a certain extent affected the local tiger populations.Beyond medicinal use, tiger penis might also have been a collection and ornamental item for the nobility and powerful classes in ancient times. In some social or ceremonial activities, owning rare items like tiger penis was regarded as a symbol of status and position. This cultural phenomenon further stimulated the demand for tiger penis.
